As an organization dedicated to supporting children and families in crisis, we recognize that holidays can be a delicate and nuanced time for many. In this series, Purposeful Perspectives, we asked our staff members to select a season, month, or day that is meaningful to them to share with our CASA community. Thank you for joining us as we take a deeper look behind the celebrations that fill our lives.
No Child Deserves Harm
By Dr. LaFayette Young, Jr.
Greetings, my name is Dr. LaFayette Young, Jr. from Georgia CASA. Today, I want to speak from the heart about the profound importance of valuing each person for their unique gifts, talents, and contributions to our world. Many children and families in foster care struggle to be truly seen and heard. Historically, our society has often only tolerated individuals with different sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions. But now, more than ever, it is crucial to affirm and support those who have been marginalized, particularly those who identify as LGBTQ+.
To affirm someone means to say, “I believe you; I believe you deserve support without judgment and harm.” As we dedicate the month of June to embracing Pride Month, let’s remember that children in the foster care system frequently do not receive the support they desperately need. Those who identify as LGBTQ+ are less likely to find permanent homes and more likely to face homelessness.
As we reflect on our values and motivations regarding Pride Month, let’s ask ourselves: What do love, compassion, and empathy look like when we actively support and commit to those who bravely embrace their true selves? Together, we can create a world where every individual is celebrated for who they are and where every child in foster care feels seen, heard, and loved.

From Foster Parent to CASA Volunteer, A Journey of Love and Service
"Fostering has taught me that control is an illusion. Despite our best efforts as parents, both biological and foster, there are countless factors beyond our control. As a youth pastor for 25 years, I had seen the struggles and heartbreaks of young people, but fostering brought these issues into our home, making them more immediate and personal." Jared Middleton shares his story as a foster parent, CASA volunteer with TLC CASA, and advocate for children and families in crisis.
