Child Welfare Statistics
National Child Abuse and Neglect
--There are an estimated 763,000 children who are the confirmed victims of child abuse or neglect each year.
--An estimated 4 children die everyday from child abuse and neglect.
--Over 423,000 children are in foster care on any given day.
--Children who suffer abuse or neglect are 53% more likely to become juvenile
delinquents, 38% more likely to be arrested as adults and 38% more likely
to become violent criminals.
--The economic cost of child abuse is estimated to be $103 billion per year.
National CASA
--Over 1,000 CASA programs exist with over 75,000 CASA volunteers.
--Over 2 million children have been served since CASA was founded in 1977.
--About 70% more children need a CASA volunteer.
Georgia Child Abuse and Neglect
--Every day, 33 children are the victims of confirmed abuse or neglect.
--186 incidents of child abuse and neglect are reported daily.
--65 children died from abuse and neglect in 2011.
--On any given day, about 7,400 children are in the foster care system.
--13,498 children came through the foster care system during state fiscal year 2011.
Georgia CASA
--In fiscal year 2012, over 8,800 children were served by over 1,960 CASA
volunteers. Over 7,500 of those children were in the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS).
--46 CASA programs serve 140 counties and 47 of the 49 judicial circuits.
